Baking For The Community

Baking For The Community

  • Mapletree Investments sponsors the development of Bakers Beyond’s new training space as an extension of their long-standing partnership with Beyond Social Services

SINGAPORE – Mapletree Investments (“Mapletree”) is pleased to sponsor a new training space for Bakers Beyond of Beyond Social Services (“Beyond”) at Blk 75 Whampoa Drive. The space will serve members of Bakers Beyond, largely low-income mothers from the community, as a place for them to meet and develop new recipes, receive training and conduct workshops.

Bakers Beyond is a volunteer-run programme that offers baking projects to generate income for the project bakers, with the aim of inculcating a culture of employment. The programme seeks to teach its members new skills such as resource management, social skills and baking techniques that they can apply to improve their lives.

In addition to baking, the new training space sponsored by Mapletree will also benefit other projects by Beyond, such as Sew Can We, a volunteer-run programme to help individuals who are unable to work full-time to pick up or improve their sewing skills, and So Can I, a programme that helps prepare participants to find employment.

Mr Hiew Yoon Khong, Group Chief Executive Officer of Mapletree, added that, “Supporting the refurbishment of the training space for Bakers Beyond is a continuation of our long-standing partnership with Beyond Social Services. We are happy to see that the baking mothers now have a dedicated training space to hone their skills and train more individuals. Together with our Mapletree Youth Resilience Programme, we hope that many families can be given the appropriate assistance to move ahead.”

Gerard Ee, Executive Director at Beyond Social Services, said, “We’re excited to commemorate Beyond’s 50th year with a brand new training space specially designed for Bakers Beyond. This initiative has been part of Beyond for 6 years and has served many from the rental flat neighbourhoods. We are hoping that with this expansion and refurbishment sponsored largely by Mapletree, we will be able to reach out to more individuals in the Whampoa vicinity. The growth and success of Bakers Beyond would not have been possible without the help of our existing partners such as Cargill TSF Asia Pte Ltd, and Majlis Ugama Islam Singapura, as well as Mapletree.”
