Singapore, 21 May, 2025 – In celebration of Singapore’s 60th birthday, The TENG Ensemble (“TENG”) will be staging Stories from an Island City – Celebrating 60 Years of Singapore at the VivoCity Amphitheatre. Presented by Mapletree Investments (“Mapletree” or “the Group”), the concert will be a reimagination of music from TENG’s acclaimed album Stories from an Island City, paying tribute to Singapore’s rich multicultural identity through a bold fusion of tradition and innovation. Tickets to the concert are available for purchase via Eventbrite S$4 to S$5 each, with a discounted rate via the “family and friends bundle” and will be held on three nights on 27, 28 and 29 June.

The concert will start at 7.30pm and TENG will perform fresh interpretations of beloved local tunes and folk songs such as Fusion which is inspired by the Malay folk song Chan Mali Chan, and Festival, which draws inspiration from Jinkli Nona, a popular Eurasian folk song.

Adding to the ensemble’s signature East-West sound, this re-imagined edition of Stories from an Island City brings together the talents of the Mapletree-TENG scholars and features an exciting lineup of guest performances from Bhaskar’s Arts Academy, accordionist Syafiqah ‘Adha Sallehin, percussionist Lalit Kumar, percussion group Nadi Singapura, and vocalists from Voices of Singapore. Together with TENG, these guest performers will enrich the concert experience with a multidisciplinary showcase of dance and choral singing.

“Our community performance series with TENG at VivoCity and Mapletree Business City has welcomed over 14,000 people since 2018, including many first-time attendees. Mapletree is proud to be supporting this series as part of our corporate social responsibility programme. We hope TENG’s special SG60 show will spark an even greater interest in the arts and give rise to more cross-cultural collaboration opportunities in the years to come,” said Mr Edmund Cheng, Chairman of Mapletree.

“Stories from an Island City is a tribute to Singapore’s rich multicultural identity and a celebration of how tradition and innovation can come together to create something truly timeless. At TENG, we believe music has the power to connect, inspire, and reflect the spirit of a nation. This concert is our love letter to Singapore — honouring our heritage while embracing the future,” said Dr Samuel Wong, Creative Director of TENG.

About The TENG Company

The TENG Company is a leading not-for-profit Singaporean music charity that harnesses the power of music for the greater good. TENG reimagines the possibilities of music, innovates within tradition, enriches the lives of the vulnerable and empowers lifelong learning. The Chinese character 鼟 (pronounced ‘tēng’) is an ancient representation for the sound of the drum, symbolising our aspirations to bring cultures together and to foster social cohesion. Through innovation and creativity, we strive to transform the conventional notions of music from our Chinese heritage and expand the boundaries of this art form beyond its traditional roots. Our three core pillars of Artistic Innovation, Industry Empowerment and Social Impact aspire to use music as a force for good and to empower future generations of musicians in and beyond Singapore.
