Mapletree and SOTA are Pleased to Announce Winners of Nationwide SOTA Primary 6 Art Competition 2019

SINGAPORE – The School of the Arts, Singapore (SOTA) announced the winners of the SOTA Primary 6 Art Competition 2019 at the Award Ceremony and opening of the winners’ exhibition on Friday, 22nd March 2019 at the SOTA Gallery. With the support of Mapletree Investments Pte Ltd (“Mapletree”), SOTA reached out to more than 140 primary schools this year, receiving more than 650 entries, up from the over 500 entries they received for the inaugural 2018 competition.

50 finalists were selected to participate in the specially organised SOTA Junior Academy (JA) in March where they were exposed to a variety of 2D and 3D art-making processes. Their submission pieces are put on display at the Winners’ Exhibition together with their other works created during the Junior Academy. Ten winners were also announced at the Award Ceremony which was attended by finalists, their family members, teachers, and principals along with SOTA and Mapletree representatives.

The competition was launched in end 2017 as a platform for young artists to express their creativity and hone their skills. “This is one of SOTA’s key outreach programmes, providing more opportunities for talented primary school pupils with a love for visual arts to showcase their skills. With Mapletree’s support, we can now reach out to even more children from all walks of life”, said Ms Amy Khoo, Vice-principal – Arts, SOTA.

Mr Edmund Cheng, Chairman of Mapletree added that, “Each of the Top 50 finalists have demonstrated their interpretation and imagination of the competition themes and impressed judges and audience with their artistic skills and creativity. To provide a well-deserved additional showcase for the finalists, we will bring the Winners’ Exhibition to Mapletree’s flagship retail mall, VivoCity from 8 April to 19 April. This is aligned to Mapletree’s commitment to bring the arts closer to the community.”

Of the 50 finalists from 2018’s competition, 14 are currently year 1 students enrolled in SOTA, some of whom assisted in curating the Winner’s Exhibition this year. The Winner’s Exhibition will be open to the public at the SOTA Gallery from March 23rd to 27th and at VivoCity from April 8th to 19th. The VivoCity exhibition is organised by Mapletree to provide a well-deserved additional showcase for the 50 finalists and to encourage more interests in the young and the community.
