SINGAPORE – Mapletree Investments (“Mapletree” or “the Group”) is pleased to support the National University Hospital’s (“NUH”) Management and Innovation for Longevity in Elderly Surgical Patients (“MILES”) programme through a sponsorship that funds the procurement of additional medical and rehabilitation equipment used to evaluate and enhance the fitness levels of patients 65 years and above.

The MILES programme is a holistic and individualised programme to assist elderly patients to quickly return to the level of function they had before surgery. Initial research has shown that by attaining a certain level of physical fitness before major surgery, elderly patients are more likely to recover well post-surgery.

Since the MILES programme was piloted in 2017, 910 elderly patients have undergone a structured care plan during their pre-surgery stage, which included physiotherapy, diet planning and consultations with doctors and nurses, so that they could attain a good level of physical fitness.

Mr Edmund Cheng, Chairman of Mapletree said, “One of Mapletree’s corporate social responsibility (“CSR”) aims is to deliver positive impact to the community. We are happy to partner NUH in this programme as it gives us an opportunity to enhance the post-surgery recovery and lives of elderly patients.”

Associate Professor (“A/P”) Alfred Kow, Head and Senior Consultant at NUH’s Division of Hepatobiliary & Pancreatic Surgery, said, “Elderly patients are at higher risk of post-surgical complications compared with younger patients. Hence, it is of utmost importance that we optimise their health and fitness prior to surgery, which can be stressful for their bodies.”

To mark this partnership and Mapletree’s support, an appreciation event was held at the NUH MILES clinic on 19 October 2022. The event was graced by Mr Tan Wah Yeow, Mapletree’s CSR Board Committee Member in the presence of Mr Wan Kwong Weng, Mapletree’s Group Chief Corporate Officer, A/Prof Kow, and Associate Professor Asim Shabbir, Head and Senior Consultant, Department of Surgery, NUH.

During the appreciation event, the NUH MILES team consisting of nurses, doctors, physiotherapists, dietitians and operations personnel shared the objectives, statistics and success stories of the MILES programme.
